IDE Simulation 2024

Integrated Democratic Europe Simulation: Shaping Future Leaders in EU Governance

The Integrated Democratic Europe Simulation (IDE) was a two-day immersive event that brought young leaders into the heart of European Union governance. Held at the Valletta Design Cluster in Malta, the simulation offered participants a hands-on experience of the legislative process within a united, federal Europe. By assuming the roles of EU country representatives, participants navigated real-world challenges such as policy drafting, negotiation, and coalition-building. The event was a unique opportunity to deepen understanding of EU governance while fostering skills essential for diplomacy and public service.

Workshops: Laying the Foundation

The simulation began with a series of expertly crafted workshops designed to immerse participants in the fundamentals of politics and EU governance. Delivered by Hon. Eve Borg Bonello, a member of the Maltese Parliament, MEP Thomas Bajada, and Ex-MEP Cyrus Engerer, these sessions offered invaluable insights into the inner workings of the EU Parliament, the art of negotiation, and the power of effective public speaking.

Political Group Meetings and Negotiation

The next phase of the simulation plunged participants into the core of EU legislative processes, as they engaged in political group meetings and rigorous amendment negotiations. Delegates were assigned to political factions: Pro-European Left, Pro-European Right, or Eurosceptics; and began crafting their positions on a legislative proposal concerning EU-China investment relations. Within their groups, they analysed key economic and diplomatic concerns, strategised cohesive policies, and sought to align diverse perspectives.

The negotiation phase tested their ability to collaborate across ideological divides, as they lobbied other delegations, debated proposed amendments, and refined legislative priorities. These immersive activities mirrored the complexities of real-world governance, offering participants a profound understanding of consensus-building and the importance of strategic compromise.

Plenary Session and Awards

The simulation reached its climax during a formal plenary session, where participants presented their country’s stances, debated amendments, and voted on the legislative proposal. The dynamic exchange of ideas and policy positions echoed the energy and intensity of an authentic EU parliamentary debate. Delegates showcased their stellar skills in public speaking, critical analysis, and advocacy, all while navigating the pressures of high-stakes decision-making. On the spot rebuttals, quick thinking and newfound alliances culminated the spirit of the Simulation resulting with the approval of the Legislative Proposal.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognising exceptional achievements, possible through our panel of exceptionally experienced judges. The ‘Best Delegate’ and ‘Honourable Mention’ awards paired with Ryanair vouchers and Tablets, highlighted outstanding performance, while the ‘Best Upcoming Potential’ awards celebrated teamwork, growth, and promise of excellence. Certificates were also distributed, acknowledging the effort and dedication of all participants. This final segment not only provided well-deserved recognition but also solidified the event’s impact, inspiring participants to continue engaging with European governance.

Conclusion

The IDE simulation successfully bridged academic theory with practical application, preparing participants for future roles in governance, diplomacy, and advocacy. By simulating the EU’s legislative process, the event not only brought European governance to a tangible level, but also highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing complex global challenges. Through interactive learning, the IDE simulation empowered the next generation of leaders to shape a more unified and democratic Europe.
